September Whole 30 Days 4 & 5

Well Day 4 & 5 went well! I am really liking Whole 30!!

I think planning is the key; and not hours of planning either. I think it seems like a lot more hard work than it is and people may be deterred by that. I want to share my meals for Day 4 and 5 and I even went out to lunch :-O I feel so empowered by Whole 30. I am headed out of the country and I am going to bring snacks, etc and focus on protein and veggies for my meals. I am planning to go to my Weight Watchers meetings tomorrow before I fly out of town and I'll give ya the results as soon as I can post!

Day 4

I've had the best sleep all week!! I even over slept so I grabbed a pack of Trader Joe's Go Raw Trek for breakfast on the bus

Lunch: I felt like getting out of the office so we went to a new restaurant call CIRCA it was a bit intimidating because I only checked the menu quickly but went in without a plan. I debated a burger but ended up picking this Mango Chicken Salad
OMG!!!!!
IT. WAS. SO. GOOD!!!
The salad had blackened grilled chicken breast, mango, grapes, tomatoes, cashews and it came with field greens but I'm just not a fan of them so I swapped for romaine lettuce and the flavors were so awesome. I didn't even need the salad dressing which I am sure was not Whole 30 friendly anyway.
My snack was Trader Joe's almond butter and bananas. Another upside of Whole 30 trying new things and liking them. Almond butter is great. I got the salted version and I still  added sea salt lol I am a salt person but it seems to have gone up on Whole 30
Another snack... lol Guacamole and plantain chips  and some salted pistachios I usually buy the unsalted but again that salt craving...

Last night I felt for breakfast for dinner!
So I made a  fried egg, fried sweet plantain (which wasn't that sweet), bacon and some left over sweet potato mash.

Day 5 (Today)

Had the veggie egg muffins (recipe below) and apple chicken sausage and sweet potato mash

The egg muffins didnt taste that great I think I microwaved them  too long so I only had half and by 10:30 I was hungry so I had yesterday's lunch which was sooo good!

So I made my famous (lol) Jerk Chicken (recipe below)  but because of the Whole 30 rules the BBQ sauce and Lawry's Jerk marinade I usually use were OUT! I actually looked up the ingredients for the Lawry's and the FIRST ingredient is High Fructose Corn Syrup!!!!!
Another great benefit of Whole 30 is I am really paying attention  to the food labels now! Why do we need all that sugar?! I guess because it makes everything taste better lol

I also roasted some mini red and white potatoes with rosemary and roasted some fresh beets

So if you have a Produce Market in your area its like a gold mine!
I got all of this for about $10.00
Fresh peeled garlic, fresh rosemary, potatoes,  scallion, beets and asparagus
RECIPES

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease 8 muffin cups or line with paper liners.
  2. Beat 6 eggs together in a large bowl. Mix ham, bell pepper, onion, salt, black pepper, and  1/2 cup of water into the beaten eggs
  3. Bake in the preheated oven until muffins are set in the middle, 18 to 20 minutes.

JERK CHICKEN

Jerk seasoning you have two options use Walker Wood  or use a food processor and combine the following ingredients

Directions:
  1. Season the chicken (thighs, legs, breast) with the salt, pepper and two tablespoons of the jerk seasoning. Cover and refrigerate the seasoned chicken in a container the night before (or at least 2 to 3 hours before cooking).
  2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Place the marinated chicken into a pan and let it bake covered for 30 minutes in the oven. Add one chopped onion, green pepper, red pepper, garlic power or garlic cloves and onion powder. Add Trader Joe's 21 Season Salute.
  4. Turn the chicken over and spread the last tablespoon of jerk seasoning on top of the chicken. Let it bake uncovered for 30 minutes on this side before removing the baked chicken from the oven. Turn again and cook for approximately 10 more minutes.

WHOLE 30 Day 2 & 3

And so it begins! My first time buying an avocado thank you Whole 30. That may be the best part of this journey trying new healthy things and actually enjoying them!
Morning! Well I am checking in as promised to give details about my Whole 30 journey. As I mentioned in the last post this is my first time doing Whole 30 so we will learn together! I am totally taking advantage of the online resources like the Facebook groups and the Instagram community #SeptemberWhole30 to learn as much as I can and get great ideas.

Ok so here's the thing I don't trust myself so I am still doing Weight Watchers which requires tracking as well as weighing in. I get the Whole 30 mindset but I'm not there so maybe if I do a round two I can step away from that level of accountability. I know I need when it comes to portion control and support and Weight Watchers is still my answer. Case in point... Day 2 but I'll get to that!

So yesterday was Day 2 and I made good use of my time. I worked from home meaning I did not have my normal 1.5 hour commute in the morning followed by a 2 hour (if I'm lucky) commute home. I did some meal prepping Monday and Tuesday and I will be honest it really didn't take that much work or time. I did more shopping and will share what I got as well!

Tuesday: Day 2

Breakfast:
Egg whites w/ ham, peppers, onions and spinach- 0
Cherry tomatoes -0
Guacamole - 3
Sweet potatoes mash with fried onions - 5

Lunch:
Roasted Yellow Pepper with Beef- 7

Dinner:
Left over Yellow pepper

Now for the Snacks:
Peach-0
Banana-0
1/2 cup salted pistachios- 5
Watermelon-0
Trader Joe's Go Raw Trek mix (small bag 1.4 cup)-7
Trader Joe's Roasted Plantain Chips (20 chips) -5

Total: 33 points (I get 30 a day)

See what happened here? Snacks off the chain. And not just 0 point snacks either. Now what I find fascinating is that these extra snacks are soooo high in points but are Whole 30 approved! But the fat content in nuts is high I guess same for the chips. Clearly I need a plan. I purchased them to be proactive because of snack at work! Around 2pm or 3pm I am always looking for a salty and/or sweet snack. Lately that means a trip to the vending machine for a 10 point treat. Now when you only get about 30 points a 10 point bag or bar of anything may fit into your weekly points but one its not a healthy option and two its a slippery slope and really easy to keep making bad choices. So I purchased a few items I'll list below and taste test them for ya!

So for today's menu:

Chicken Sausage- 3
1 Veggie egg muffin- 2
Sweet potato mash with onions (1/2 cup)- 5

Snacks:
Banana -0
1 TBSP Almond Butter
Trader Joe Roasted Plantain chips (10)- 2

Lunch:

Salmon- 4 points
Romaine lettuce- 0

Dinner:

Baked chicken with Spices -3 points
Spinach sauteed - 1

That still leaves me with 7 points today so I have some pistachios in baggies and fresh fruit.

Meal and snack prep. I used my measuring cup so I had the portions down correctly and I used my snack size bags and packed them up. Best tip as soon as you come home from shopping do the work!

My day at a glance! Egg whites I got from Sam's there were six boxes for about $6.00

More snacks!

My Trader Joe haul!

They are high in points and a lil too sweet for me but I think a good  options

Almond butter and bananas. LOVE IT!

THIS WEEK'S MANTRA

DAY 3 Breakfast

My 7 point Trader Joe Go Trek Raw Trail mix. The worst part is this is not the one I really like but that has added sugar. :-(

I've been reading a lot of post about headaches and feeling tires and how hellish Day 2 and 3 can be. I have not had any of those problems! I was talking to my sister and I was saying maybe its because I've done Paleo before and by and large I do not each a lot of starches or sugar in general its just isn't hitting me. I have more energy, I am sleeping better and I am still working out along this 100 plus day journey. I don't know what gives some of my sorors in the AKA Women workout groups have had headaches etc so if you are feeling that ride it out!

Of course I snuck on the scale for two reasons! One I need the positive feedback. two I am headed away and will not make it to my normal WW meeting. So far down another 2.8!!! I may try to weigh in on Friday evening to get it officially but we will see! So far so good!

I'm Doing Whole 30!

Well its Day 1 of Whole 30 !   So what's Whole 30?! According to their website...

"Eat meat, seafood, eggs, tons of vegetables, some fruit, and plenty of good fats from fruits, oils, nuts and seeds. Eat foods with very few ingredients, all pronounceable ingredients, or better yet, no ingredients listed at all because they’re totally natural and unprocessed."

With that said if you recall my foray with Paleo that it sounds easy enough but it actually eliminates A LOT!!! Well Whole 30 is even more strict than Paleo but I'm game! I promised I would share my daily menu so if others want to try they have some examples to work with! I am still doing Weight Watchers and I recently went back to my Personal Trainer.

Breakfast
1 scrambled
2 slices bacon
1/2 cup  fresh salsa
1/4 cup guacamole

Snack
Watermelon

Lunch
4oz baked salmon
1  cup fresh spinach
1 cup roasted beets

Dinner *Later tonight
Stuffed  Pepper
1/2 cup fresh salsa
1/4 cup guacamole
1/2 cup sauteed spinach, carrots, onions
Sweet potatoe mash

Snack
Organic Apple  sauce

The amazing thing with eating like this is the way my Weight Watcher points are maximized! I still have 20* points left out of 31 and I am FULL!!!

Breakfast

Salmon

From Sam's came on cedar plank added spices

90% lean ground beef

Fresh peppers

Will add salsa and guac!

Prep for the week! Breakfast is tough since I leave sooooo early so I made these for the rest of the week! I've made them before but typically add cheese but with Whole 30 that's a no no so I filled up on veggies!

Six eggs added water and veggies

Well that's all of now! It was a good Day 1 I feel full and satisfied! My energy is good even though I went to New York  yesterday for the Bad Boy Reunion Concert and took a bus back at 1am and got home after 3am and I was up and ready for my 9am workout!  I refused to miss my Personal Training session! It is good to be back with Charles!!! We did some new stuff I LOVED and I know I will feel it tomorrow!

My First 100 Days...

I can't believe its been almost six months since I updated this blog. My apologies! Time surely flies! So much has happened and no I am not pregnant! Ha!

So 100 days ago I woke up at like 4:30am and went to Planet Fitness and joined their gym. I have a really consistent internal clock and I kept waking up between 4-5am totally refreshed and ready to take on the day but I have a crazy commute that includes a bus that doesn't start running until 5:30am and I found myself just home, wide awake, watching Law & Order. Needless to say by the time I would get home 12 hours later I would be too tired to think about the gym... so 100 Days ago I woke up and went and  joined a 24 hour gym so I could make use of my internal clock.

I want to stop here and say years ago like in high school I came up with the idea of a 24 hour gym and 24 hair salon. And in college I came up with that idea of the 100 calorie snacks. I called them "Dieters portions" but I am just ahead of my time and not old enough to get investors apparently. Pre-Shark Tank life. I could be retired by now. Anyhoo... that's why I joined Planet Fitness...

Ok that was the short version which you know I am long winded so here's the whole story...

So I was watching one of my Link Sisters (Hey Lisa!) participate in some kind of gym challenge. Every morning she would check in at the gym around 6am. I don't even know how many weeks she did it but she was counting "Week 4 Day 2, Week 4 Day 3," etc. it was a lot of weeks and enough for me to notice and congratulate her on her commitment to exercise! It reminded me of this fitness magazine article I read like 20 years ago where they interviewed several top CEOs about their fitness regimen and one of them said that he wakes up and exercises every day the same way he wakes up and brushes his teeth.

I always thought that was so impressive. Like who does that? The quick answer is...Someone who puts themselves first even if they are in charge of a muli-million dollar corporation.

I saw another article about The President and he even works out five to six days a week. So I started thinking why can't I? I was almost done with my year as President of the Junior League of Baltimore and I was telling myself when I was done I would go back to the gym. Now with all the work and stress I knew better; I should have been in the gym constantly but nope!

So while all those other things were swirling around in my head I thought about all the work I was doing with the JL and I had a mantra for my year as President that came from an awesome trainer (Vickie Clark) I spoke with about a huge conflict that erupted at the beginning of my term last year. She told me that in everything that I do as President I should ask myself "Does it move the mission forward?" She said if you can say yes then stay the course. She reminded me you cannot make everyone happy but my job as President was to make sure the mission was the focus.

So I woke up that morning thinking about MY mission. In 2009 when I wanted to lose 100 pounds I told myself I wanted to live a happy and healthy life; so I woke up and asked myself what am I doing about moving MY MISSION forward? I gave the Junior League almost a year of my hard work, dedication, commitment and money and why should I wait one more day to get back on track with my health and fitness goals. So I got up, got dressed and joined their gym.

I didn't have a goal or plan other than to work out every day. I told myself it didn't have to be a grueling workout because a lot of time if I didn't have at least one hour to give I would skip working out so I told myself  go with the medically recommended 30 minutes of intentional exercise every day. That is for health, not necessarily just for weight loss but to improve your overall health. I read several great articles about it and about how long it takes for something to become a habit and I began working out everyday for at least 30 minutes. Some days I was up at 4am and at the gym other times it was after 10pm on my at home treadmill. I had several trips and still stayed on track! I went back to Weight Watchers and I started back with my Personal Trainer Charles Chizel it Harris and we are doing lots of weight lifting which is so important.

I am happy to report I am down 7 POUNDS!!!! Summer is not weight loss friendly to me so this is a HUGE victory. I participated in the WW Summer TRY aton and went to all 12 weeks except one! I am really excited that I was consistent over the summer... between Las Vegas, Atlanta, Martha's Vineyard, a busy work schedule and just life in general I'm just really happy, excited and proud!

And working out everyday is going to be my thing. I can always find time to do so much for so many people I enjoyed sharing the importance I am placing on myself and my health. I came to the conclusion that if I do not lose any more weight I am ok where I am. Ideally I would like to lose at least 29 more pounds and get back to my 100 pound weight loss goal from four or so years ago. But honesty I am ok here. I know I can eat better so that's my focus for this fall now that the exercise part is MY THING now (lol).

In an effort to kick start that I am still sticking with Weight Watchers because the fact of the matter is I love to eat. I don't know how other people do it but I could eat all day and not realize how much I have had so Weight Watcher works for me because it gives me boundaries. So along with WW I am going to do Whole 30. Its like the mean version of Paleo  (lol) which I love and works wonders for me.

I must say I feel a lot better when I do not have a lot of dairy (especially yogurt) and wheat products. I am not a huge bread fan and I do not miss Greek yogurt. It encourages you to cook more and eat healthier foods. Similarly, WW encourages you in the same way based on the point values of certain foods. I notice lately I am relying a lot on processed foods for snacks and by the middle of the afternoon I have run through a gang of points on things like granola bars, chips, and the like. Fruits and veggies are 0 points so carrots and guac for 4 points vs a small bag of chips for 10 and when you only get 30 points you can see how snacking like that can add up quickly. So Whole 30 will be a good opportunity to reset my eating habits for the Fall.  Between today and December 31st there are 121  Days or 17 weeks + if I lose even 1.5 pounds on average every week I will be almost at goal by the new year! How exciting as that?!?!

So I'll be blogging more regularly about my Whole 30 journey. The goal will be to share daily on Instagram what I'm eating and I'll share the recipes on here so if you want to come along please do!! #SeptemberWhole30  is their hash tag and you can follow me with the hashtag #CyliaWhole30

I have a big trip planned in the middle of all of this so we will see how that goes but I have the book and I'm pretty excited to try something new! So hope you join in and enjoy the journey! I am overdue for a new vision board so hopefully I'll work on that over the holiday weekend and share some tips for you to get your 2017 one started!

Meditating in March

I've been MIA but for a good cause... VACATION! I had an awesome trip to Thailand! It was right on time. Talk about PERFECT timing! I've had so much going on I really didn't realize what my mind and body were going through until I was 30,000 feet in the air. As I have mentioned I am currently serving as the President for the Junior League of Baltimore! And its A LOT OF WORK! I mean I knew it would be but you really don't know until you know. With over 330 members from ages 21-83, a building, a thrift store, 6 employees, 990s, repairs, fundraising, audits, monthly membership meetings, monthly board meetings, committee meetings, and personalities! Wheewwwwww! Its a lot... I'm basically running a non-profit without an Executive Director, building manager or store manager. Amazing training ground but it quickly became clear being a "working President" poses significant challenges. With that said traveling is my passion and really the only way I can de-stress so I am sure my outgoing president's song will talk about my many travels throughout the year lol (Iceland, Jamaica, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and now Thailand) which by the way was an AMAZING trip! Amazing! I love traveling it keeps me centered and I am blessed to be able to do it. But there was a lot of foooooddddd! Our Thai tour guide told us their goal is to have everyone gain at least five pounds before they go home lol. Well I was successful!

As a quick review I lost 10 pounds after rejoining Weight Watchers and doing Smart Points. It is a great plan then I got sick and it turned out it was bronchitis and everything went downhill! I gained seven pounds in a week! A freaking week! Now I did eat all kinds of "bad" foods so I'm not saying I don't know howwwwww I gained it... I'm just being unreasonable and being annoyed by it lol so indulge me for a venting minute... It took like two months to lose it and poof like that it came back!!!!! In Thailand I gained an additional three. So I am back to where I was when I rejoined WW. *SIGH*

Now for my "Beyond the Scale" moments:

On the upside I came back and went right to the grocery store and bought lots of meats, veggies and fruits! I cooked and packed lunch all week and I must say I was proud of myself for doing that.

I have not made it to a WW meeting in a minute because I've had a lot of things to do on Saturday so I am making that a point to go back this Saturday morning.

Another beyond the scale moment I started the FREE  21-Day Meditation Experience, Shedding the Weight: Mind, Body and Spirit. with Oprah and Deepak Chopra! I started this morning bright and early and it was a great mediation. Years ago that was how I started my early days at the office and it made a difference so I am glad this popped up in my email box while I was away and made a promise to commit to this! I will be honest I have not meditated in a longgggggg time so my mind was all over the place! I know it will get better though. I used the centering thought for today which was is:

My struggle has ended. I am in harmony with myself.

I reposted an old blog post from 2010 and I said I really need to get the 2010 Cylia back! I was SOOOOOO focused! Soooo focused. I do feel like I did not have a lot of balance at that time I would skip parties, happy hours, etc because I didn't trust myself to exercise good judgement. That wasn't healthy but I was so focused on that goal I got results b y any means necessary so I am trying to incorporate some of those good habits like blogging, journaling, exercising regularly, and mediating back into this journey!

Similar to other goals I am working on... I used to feed myself good stories, positive affirmations, and vision boards with my weight loss and health and fitness goals since my focus has shifted to other goals I have slacked up on that. So I am going to restart that good Law of Attraction work. So in addition to the 21 Day mediation I am listening to the Oprah call on the Weight Watchers website as I am typing this. Oprah is talking to Weight Watcher Success Stories and its a good way to feed my mind on this goal. Oprah just said its a big spiritual journey its not just about taking off the pounds. I agree with that. The best thing I can hold on to is I've done this before and unlike a newbie trying to figure it out what's best I already have the winning formula its just about following though.

Well that's all for now! Below here are a few pictures from my awesome trip with my sister!

Bye for now!

The Matrix, Blizzards, and Babies

Well we are in the midst of a historic blizzard apparently... I was joking on Facebook that I was just saying to myself I needed like five days off of work and from my extra curricula activities to do some de cluttering, organize my closets and do laundry so my bad about the blizzard because my Law of Attraction game is strong lol

All jokes aside thank The Lord. I have so much stuff between getting married, AKA, Links and Junior League I'm overwhelmed with stuff. I had several bins I already purchased to get my stuff together so I have been making my way through all of it and from the looks of things I won't be back to work until Wednesday earliest so there are my five straight days and no vacation days required!

Lo & behold my favorite movie The Matrix was on yesterday and it's in now. Mannnnnn that movie changed my whole life. It really was my first adult introduction to the Law of Attraction although it never used the term. I typically have a theme for every year and 1999's theme was "1999 is not a game" it was a hard, sad, tough lessons learned, really deep year. Between the Matrix and Lauryn Hill's MisEducation album my mindset started to shift. It was NOT quick or easy and there were lots of ups and downs but I understood changing my life... all aspects of it, began with how I think. The information I willing took in and most importantly learning how to ignore what was not helpful even when people thought their negativity was a form of support or assistance. Most people who know me know I don't like repeating things; I bore easily and so I don't re-read, re-watch, re-do anything often. The Matrix? I can watch everyday. I love it.

As God would have it as I was getting dressed for my wedding it came on and man the photographer had a field day taking pictures of me and my karate moves lol I took it as a good omen :-)

Anyhoo  all of  that was to say watching it yesterday made me realize I am so over the gym. Soooooo over it I  think I need to go do something active like boxing, maybe back to Krav Maga or even Karate... Treadmills aint getting it for me right now. I need to think about it and just do it. I really like Krav Maga and its close to my home. I'll update yall any suggestions are welcomed!

So went to my OB/Gyn recently and had the baby talk so I told her my goal is to lose 50 pounds this year to be ready for us to start next year. She agreed it was a good idea and a lot of women go on a baby diet as she called it.

So Weight Watchers update this makes three weeks I have not been to the meetings! First week I had the Alpha Kappa Alpha Leadership conference, second week was the day after the Founders' Day celebration (lol) nuff said  see pics below and this week Blizzard 2016. I finally got on my own WW scale and I am now down almost 4 more pounds!!! According to Weight Watchers I am averaging .09 pounds loss a week which is right on track for my goal of 50 pounds in a year! And 2 more pounds and I get a month free.

I am trying to log in on my phone and really working on my water. The exercise though I'm just not inspired, motivated or feeling it at all but ohhhhhh vanity I need to take my Presidential portrait for Junior League and I would at least like to lose another 10 pounds by then. My face looks so different with every 5 -10 pounds its crazy. So between the future baby and  my photo I'm highly motivate to stick with the Smart Points plan. LOL I aint shamed!

So weird to even think about family planning I have a lot of plans and goals and I had a great conversation with my good friend Danielle last week and she made me put my baby plan in the timeline LOL I just think there is never a perfect time to have a baby. I think there may be times that are better than others but a perfect time to have a whole human being to take care of, pay for, feed, talk to and keep breathing and hope they don't become a serial killer... no perfect time for that. I see some of my family members, Sorors and coworkers and friends do it to varying degrees of  success and I'm getting all kinds of stories some good but most bad lol maybe they don't mean for them to sound bad but I swear I don't know how the planet is over populated lol I'm taking it all in keeping in mind just like my love life... I get to write my own story so their lives are just FYI. Law of Attraction game is strong on my end so I am appreciative of people sharing their stories. I surely don't take parenthood lightly and I think that's a good thing. I think a lot of people go in with rose colored glasses and I don't know why but I  love the conversation and found a new idol Marissa Mayer CEO of Yahoo! She had her first baby at 40 or almost 40 and took of 2 weeks!!! DUDE TWO WEEKS LOL She's a rock star in my book! Talk about writing your OWN STORY! There are levels to this....

Anyhoo I have the perfect husband for me to make me willing to take the journey. Thank God for that!

Well that's all for now!! Stay safe and warm good people!

First 13 days of 2016

The first 13 days of 2016 have been busssyyyyy! All good things though. I missed the Saturday Weight Watchers meeting because of a sorority leadership meeting. I weighed in at home and it was the exact same as last week. I was not as diligent about tracking last week and this week. No real reason just fell behind and next thing you know its been three days. I find I do better when I'm in a routine so going  back to the office helped me a lot. Food hasn't been perfect but that's the beauty and appeal of Weight Watchers... just use your points.

I'm really focused on doing things I enjoy in 2016 and Broadway is one thing high on my list! I took a trip to New York with my friend to see The Gin Game with Cicely Tyson and James Earl Jones  they were great! Living Legends! We went to eat at the famous Junior's Cheesecake and I had their Thai ginger wings and got a slice strawberry cheesecake to go. I still have not eaten it lol

I forgot to wear my pedometer but I'm sure I got plenty of steps in on those New York city blocks! I am glad I was feeling a bit better I seem to have injured my left hip after doing Bikram yoga last week Sunday! I mean pain in my hip like I've never felt!! I said that's it no more yoga... my 40 year old hip can't take it lol So I have been sidelined because of that and I was on a roll with walking in my building too! Oh well! I will take it easy for the rest of this week and start up again.

In other news, I've been using my gratitude journal. Not daily but I try to write a few things in it every day I am at work. But I need to do a 2016 Health and Fitness vision board! I need to do my daily affirmations! I found this list online and they are good.

The trick to to say them, write them, and look at them to make them stick. I have been a bit busy between Junior League , AKA and work but I  went to see my doctor and told her I want to lose 50 pounds before getting pregnant so she said that's common to do a "baby diet" so I have a good motivating factor.   I know this is all apart of the puzzle so I am on it. I am also working on getting my water intake up to 64oz. Its been a struggle though but I am at least focused on it and posting in the AKA workout group to add to the accountability and that is better than nothing! Already had 16.9 oz and its on 7:15am! So 3.5 more bottles to go!

That's all the updates for now!!! Have a great week! Will check in after Saturday's weigh in!
